Martin Merrell Completes Lands End to John O'Groats Charity Challenge

Martin_2A crash which almost hospitalised him, saddle soreness, stalkers – and don’t mention the extra 186 miles  – still didn’t stop a Wells specialist from completing a charity cycle challenge.

Martin Merrell, a Somerset chiropractor, is now back at Wells Leisure Centre, managed by Avalon Leisure, treating the county’s injured and aching after enduring his own private physical battle – the notorious Lands End to John O'Groats cycle ride last month.

Mr Merrell, 36, who is married to occupational therapist Gemma, raised more than £700 for Mencap and completed the infamously gruelling expedition with younger brother Garry, who raised money for The National Deaf Children's Society.

An ex-professional cyclist and one-time county-level athlete, Mr Merrell admits his dream was almost undone when a car driver crashed into him in Bolton, crushing the wheel of his bike and only narrowly avoiding hospitalising him.

“I had a really lucky escape,” said Mr Merrell, a specialist in treating sports injuries and rehabilitation and a trained masseur.

“Luckily the driver was a really nice lady. She admitted straight away it was her fault, drove to a bike shop to pay for repairs and even gave us a donation for our charities. My ankle was sore for the rest of the trip but at least we could carry on.

“We met lots of generous people who donated money – even some worrying Lands End to John O’Groats groupies – a couple who spend their time spotting people completing the route, befriending them and following them in their car.”

It was brother Garry who volunteered to plan the route, later breaking the news to his by-then painfully saddle-sore brother he had taken him off course in the wilds of Scotland to add an extra 180-plus miles to the otherwise 874miles ride in order to fulfil a personal ambition of breaking the 1,000 mile barrier.

“We are still talking,” said Mr Merrell. There route saw them cover 1,060m in 10 days at an average speed of 15.3mph.

Martin is currently treating at Wells Leisure Centre on Tuesday's and Friday's, and contactable on 07780972038.
